Free tuition to SUNY and CUNY students whose families earn $125,000 or less a year

CWA Local 1101 joined Hillary Clinton at LaGuardia Community College in support of  Governor Cuomo's ceremonial signing of NYS's new free tuition program, The Excelsior Scholarship Program. The program was included as part of the states new budget and offers free tuition to SUNY and CUNY students whose families earn $125,000 or less a year.

Utility Locators Fight for First Contract

January 30, 2017. By Dan DiMaggio, Labor Notes.  Utility locators in New York City and Long Island are fighting for a first contract with United States Infrastructure Corporation. Members say the company has been stonewalling at the bargaining table, aiming to frustrate them into decertifying the union. Before utility companies can perform underground excavations, laws require that lines be marked aboveground. Locators induce a signal from underground lines, then spray paint the ground to guide utility workers when they dig.

Members of CWA Local 1101’s mobilization committee were at USIC headquarters in Hauppauge, Long Island before daybreak on Wednesday and Thursday this week with a message for USIC: “Bargain a fair contract for the locators now”. We brought a giant rat with us, to make sure everyone on Marcus Boulevard and beyond knew the truth: that USIC is not treating its workers fairly.

CWA Joe Beirne Foundation Scholarships 2017-2018

Applications for the CWA Joe Beirne Foundation's scholarship for the 2017-2018 school year are now open. The deadline to apply is April 29, 2017. The Foundation's Board of Directors has approved the awarding of fifteen (15) partial college scholarships of $3,000 each for two (2) years.

New Labor Studies Class: Contract Administration. Apply Now

The Contract Administration class will meet Tuesday evenings at 6:15pm beginning January 31.  This is a great opportunity to learn more about how contracts are negotiated, different approaches to solving workplace problems, and grievance procedures. Participants will discuss how to resolve problems that are contract-based by effectively using the grievance procedure, as well as strategies to increase member involvement and build the union.  Meet union members from other locals across the city as well as other CWA Local 1101 members.

USIC Workers Outside and Inside the Bargaining Room Demand a Good Contract

Workers at USIC showed up at bargaining yesterday to tell management they’re not happy with how things are going. The USIC workers, who do tone and mark work for various utility companies, joined CWA Local 1101 last year.

Verizon Select Service Workers Vote to Join Local 1101

On October 6 the technicians at Verizon Select Services voted to join CWA Local 1101. They voted 11-4 to join CWA.
