Local 1101 Representatives Meet with Congressman Engel and Congresswoman Lowey

As part of the continuing fight to stop the “fast tracking” of the latest free trade deal, members of CWA Local 1101 met in Yonkers with both Congressman Eliot Engel and Congresswoman Nita Lowey last Sunday morning.  President Obama and some Congressional representatives are trying to pass the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), a regional pact among 12 nations that would be one of the world’s biggest trade agreements.

Martin Luther King, Jr Speaking to Sanitation Workers in Memphis, TN

As our nation celebrates the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr, it is important to recall that Dr. King gave his life in Memphis in a battle for justice for striking workers. Dr. King was a powerful voice for economic justice, as well as for civil rights for African Americans.  It is worth watching his last speech, delivered to strike sanitation drivers in Memphis. “…If you stand up straight, people can’t ride your back. And that’s what we did. We stood up straight.”

AT&T Selling Connecticut Operations to Frontier

December 17, 2013|Dan Haar. AT&T has reached a deal to sell its wireline business in Connecticut to Frontier Communications for $2 billion incash, ending a 15-year venture that led to thousands of job losses as the number of regular phone lines declined, technology improved and the company moved support operations elsewhere.

Stamford-based Frontier, which operates in 27 states, will take over the old Southern New England Telephone Co. business, which legally still has that name. The operations include 2,700 employees, 900,000 wireline telephone connections, 415,000 Internet connections and 180,000 U-verse video subscribers for a total of $1.25 billion in annual revenues, along with the network itself and a lease at AT&T's New Haven offices.

Week of Action Ends With Foley Square Rally

At least a thousand people gathered at Foley Square in Lower Manhattan Thursday evening, culminating a "Week of Action" organized by the New Day New York Coalition which includes unions, low wage workers, and activist groups from around the City. The march served to punctuate a series of protests and demonstrations held across the city highlighting income inequality, low wages, and poor working conditions.

Speedwire Technicians Join Local 1101

On Tuesday, November 26th the workers of Speedwire, Inc voted to join Local 1101. Speedwire is a communications company that spans coast to coast. In March of this year AT&T launched its Digital Life product. Digital Life allows customers to link their homes to wireless products.
