World Trade Center Health Program & Victim Compensation Benefits

If you were affected by 9/11 as part of the response and recovery efforts or if you lived or worked in the WTC vicinity, you can still apply to the World Trade Center Health Program and you may still be eligible for VCF benefits. The World Trade Center Health Program consists of WTC Clinical Centers of Excellence in the NY metropolitan area, including NYC, Long Island, and NJ, and there is National Program for WTC-related health care throughout the country. The CWA District 1 Health and Safety office has maintained numerous documents collected from employers and members in the months after 9/11.

Update: Legionnaires' Disease in South Bronx

As of Monday, August 4th, the number of people affected by "the South Bronx Outbreak" of Legionnaires' disease has climbed to 81, including 7 deaths. Five cooling towers in the South Bronx have tested positive for legionella: the Opera House Hotel, The Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, a Verizon office building, Streamline Plastics Company, and the Concourse Plaza. All 5 have been flushed with bleach, followed by fresh water.

Farmworkers in NY, thousands of men and women who feed us each day, deserve a day of rest, overtime pay, the right to organize and form a union among many other important rights that all other workers enjoy.

NY’s farmworkers form the backbone of the state’s multi-billion agricultural industry, but these workers are excluded from basic labor protections under state and federal law. Chris Shelton Elected President of CWA

Christopher Shelton was elected the new president of the Communications Workers of America by acclamation of delegates to the union's 75th convention. He succeeds Larry Cohen who stepped down after serving as president for ten years and spending 39 years organizing and working in CWA.

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on Fast Track any day now. We can defeat this bill but we will need every possible vote so we need to keep the pressure on every member of Congress.
