On Sunday, October 20th CWA Local 1101 will be co-sponsoring the annual MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER walk at Orchard Beach in the Bronx. We will be marching side by side with other unions, organizations, and plenty of goodhearted people to support the amazing survivors and to honor the lives of the ones who we lost.

New York City Metro PCS Workers Vote to Join CWA

New York City retail store employees at a MetroPCS store in Harlem voted Wednesday for a union voice and representation by CWA. The vote was 7-1.  The number may seem small, but it's a huge victory for these workers and for thousands more across T-Mobile US who want representation to address their issues on the job. MetroPCS merged with T-Mobile US earlier this year.

Verizon has a big plan for the Internet. And if that doesn’t worry you, it should.

The company is trying to overturn the Federal Communications Commission’s Open Internet Order, which prevents Internet service providers from blocking, throttling or otherwise discriminating against online content.  And in court last Monday, Verizon lawyer Helgi Walker made the company’s intentions all too clear, saying the company wants to prioritize those websites and services that are willing to shell out for better access. She also admitted that the company would like to block online content from those companies or individuals that don’t pay Verizon’s tolls. In other words, Verizon wants to control your online experience and make the Internet more like cable TV, where your remote offers only the illusion of choice.

Verizon offers alternative to Voice Link on Fire Island

Verizon officials unveiled a plan Tuesday to bring fiber-optic cable to western Fire Island, where public outcry has swelled over a decision to not replace the landlines destroyed last fall.

After superstorm Sandy knocked out miles of underground cables in western Fire Island, Verizon -- the barrier island's only landline carrier -- started replacing them with Voice Link, a home phone service that operates off the wireless network.

But in comments to the state Public Service Commission, the Federal Communications Commission and at public meetings, residents blasted Voice Link, which they said provided unreliable service in an emergency, did not come with Internet capability and was an inadequate substitute for landlines.

Response to AT&T Mobility Restructuring

AT&T Mobility announced a restructuring of certain positions in the retail stores in early July. Managers had meetings with retail employees to explain the new structure. The Finance Representative positions are being eliminated and they are planning to reduce the number of Sales Support Representatives across the country. This impacts approximately 25,000 workers in AT&T Mobility.

Deadline nears for 9/11 health victims

Oct 3 is the last day for most people to register to receive compensation for a 9/11-related health issue, as established by the James Zadroga Health and Compensations Act.

Open Enrollment begins October 23, 2013

The 2014 Annual Open Enrollment dates are as follows:

Active Members: October 23, 2013 to November 6, 2013. Retired Members: November 7, 2013 to November 21, 2013.  Note: Retirees can call starting November 1, 2013. Retirees can continue to make changes up through November 30, 2013 to be effective January 1, 2014.  Members who want to continue with their current health plan you don't need to do anything.

Verizon to Sell Part of NYC Tower to Condo Developer

Bloomberg News. By Oshrat Carmiel & David M. Levitt.  Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ), the second-largest U.S. phone company, agreed to sell part of its New York headquarters building for $274 million to a developer who plans to convert the space to luxury housing.
