CWA Local 1101, along with other CWA Locals in NYC and District 1, endorsed Bill de Blasio for mayor. He has been on our picket lines, stood with us against greedy corporations and corporate interests, and shown his commitment to the working men and women of New York City again and again.

The Campaign Finance Board will be holding a mayoral debate, broadcast on NBC, next Tuesday, September 3rd at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. We'll have a strong CWA presence there in support of Bill de Blasio. Can you be there?

March In Washington To Continue Focus On Civil Rights

Local 1101 members joined the March on Washington, DC this past Saturday commemorating the historic civil rights march of 1963 and pledging to continue the struggle for civil rights today.

WASHINGTON -- Tens of thousands of people marched to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and down the National Mall on Saturday, commemorating the 50th anniversary of King's famous speech and pledging that his dream includes equality for gays, Latinos, the poor and the disabled.

The event was an homage to a generation of activists that endured fire hoses, police abuse and indignities to demand equality for African Americans. But there was a strong theme of unfinished business.

"This is not the time for nostalgic commemoration," said Martin Luther King III, the oldest son of the slain civil rights leader. "Nor is this the time for self-congratulatory celebration. The task is not done. The journey is not complete. We can and we must do more."

2013 Scholarship Award Winners

Local 1101 has a long-standing and proud tradition of awarding scholarships each year to members and their families. This year we were proud to announce a new scholarship established to honor the memory of former President of CWA Local 1101 Ed Dempsey.

The number of scholarships awarded each year is determined by the Executive Board based on the funds available. This year nineteen scholarships were awarded.

Local 1101 Scholarship Award: 17 recipients will receive $1000 each.

Dennis Diemer Scholarship Award: 1 recipient will receive $1000 each year he/she is in school, recurring automatically for up to four years (*This is in addition to the former winners who are still receiving payments of their award).

Ed Dempsey Scholarship Award: 1 recipient will receive a one-time payment of $5000.

Fire Island residents sound off on Verizon phone service

A state Public Service Commission hearing on Verizon's proposal to replace landlines with wireless service on western Fire Island drew a vocal crowd in Ocean Beach on Saturday.

Citing damage from superstorm Sandy, the phone service provider has said replacing copper wire infrastructure is too costly and that future storms could damage old technology.

Verizon Surplus Numbers 3Q 2013

Verizon has declared a surplus in FAAs 1,2,3,4,5 & 6. This surplus has been determined by the Company to be due to a process change, not an external event. The provisions of FAP Articles 8(b) and 10 will not apply. CWA Local 1101 titles affected by the surplus appear in column marked FAA 1.
