Local 1101 Members Testify at Safe Staffing Hearing

Nurses and health care providers gave harrowing testimony about under-staffing at hospitals, nursing homes and health care facilities across the state, and the impact on patients and workers. "A nurse with an unsafe patient assignment is a disaster waiting to happen. A potential patient emergency could be avoided with the implementation of safer staffing ratios," Elizabeth testified.

Valerie testified "We as nurses cannot give the best possible care to our patients if we don’t have the tools, resources, and time required to do so. When nurses are forced to care for too many patients at once the quality of our patients care drops, and our nurses' ability to deliver quality care dwindles to a dangerous level."

CWA, representing 10,000 health care workers in New York State, held a rally in conjunction with the hearing, together with the New York State Nurses Association and the Public Employees Federation. They were joined by allies and elected officials, including Comptroller Scott Stringer and City Councilwoman Carlina Rivera.
