Happy International Women's Day

Wishing all of our CWA Local 1101 members a happy International Women's Day. We have come a long way - in no small part thanks to being part of a union - and we have a long way to go for full equality for all women.

The following institutions join in commemorating and encouraging the study and celebration of the vital role of women in American history. The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Click here for the compiled articles and images.

The State of the Gender Pay Gap 2019

The State of the Gender Pay Gap 2019 report "Women of Color Face Multiple Barriers to Advancement in the Workplace states:

"Since we have started tracking the gender pay gap, the difference between the earnings of women and men has shrunk. But significant disparity in how men and women are paid still remains. The uncontrolled gender pay gap, which takes the ratio of median earnings of all women to all men, decreased by $0.05 since 2015. However, women still make only $0.79 for every dollar men make in 2019."

If money talks, then it says one thing loud and clear: working women are still being shortchanged. On average in 2019, for every dollar American men were paid, women received only 80 cents. There are varying explanations, including that women tend to be clustered in lower-paying occupations.

But this gender pay gap used to be much wider, for one obvious reason: it was once perfectly legal to pay female employees less for the same work men did. This blatant discrimination was finally outlawed here in the U.S. by the Equal Pay Act of 1963.

Employers hadn’t suddenly become feminist converts: such laws came into existence, here and in other countries, thanks to earlier generations of women who demanded, and organized for, equal pay for equal work.
