25 Years After 9/11: A Lifetime Ago, Like Yesterday

September 11, 2026. Today is the 25 year anniversary of 9/11. We’re here to honor those who lost their lives in the heinous attacks of September 11, 2001, as well as those who died from 9/11-related illnesses afterward.

This is an especially hard day. We all have friends and co-workers who aren’t with us anymore because of the time they spent working downtown after 9/11. Many of our members and retirees have been diagnosed with 9/11 related illnesses in the years since.

We’re proud of the work our members did after 9/11. No-one thought we could get the network back up in less than a week, and then rebuild the entire network of lower Manhattan. It truly was a heroic effort. The work was hard, the emotional toll was harder. The price so many of our members have paid since is beyond words. 

Most 1101 members who worked downtown have enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Program and go for yearly check ups. If you worked below Canal Street after 9/11 and haven’t registered with the Health Program, it's not too late. Call the Local for help registering. If you were going for yearly screenings and stopped, you can restart. 

For the 25 year anniversary, we wanted to tell the story of Local 1101 members’ experiences through their own voices. This special edition of the Local 1101 Generator is a glimpse of the work our members did, what they went through, and what stuck with them the most. 

Please take a moment of silence today in memory of those who died on 9/11 and those we lost due to 9/11 related illnesses afterward.
