Working at Arms Acres & Conifer Park During COVID-19

CWA Local 1101 members at Arms Acres and Conifer Park rehabiliation facilities in upstate New York were on the front line when COVID-19 hit. Working with vulnerable populations in a high-risk situation, things were dangerous and tense in the early days of the pandemic. Procedures were changing daily as managers, workers and union representatives tried to figure out how to keep everyone safe. We asked some of our members what it was like to be there during the onset of the pandemic, and how things are now.

Welcoming Our New Local 1101 members in Menands, NY

Sheila Burke is the Chief Steward for the accounting department in Menands, near Albany. She works in the Remittance Processing Center where Verizon bills are processed. Sheila and her co-workers were originally part of Local 1113, then became Local 1105. She’s been at Verizon for 49 years. “Years ago there were 2000 members in accounting. Technology changes, attrition…we’re down to 54 people in the department now. I’ve been here a long time. I want to make sure our people are in good hands. I’m so looking forward to being part of 1101.”

Now is the Time to Start Making Your Plans to Vote!

Dear 1101 Members. First, I want to thank you for your solidarity and hard work over the past several months, which have been so challenging for all of us, our families and communities. CWA members have stepped up as frontline workers in manufacturing, telecommunications, airlines, health care, journalism, government services and in many other sectors during the Covid-19 pandemic. We have fought companies, municipalities, and other employers for safer workplace conditions and adequate protections for all of us. Together, we’ve pushed our elected representatives in Congress to pass legislation that puts workers first. Now, one of the biggest elections of our lifetime is coming up in November. The votes that we cast as union members will be crucial in ensuring we have pro-labor candidates elected at the local and state level all the way up to the White House. CWA members need to show our voting power and solidarity at the ballot box.

Remembering the CWA Heroes of September 11

Nineteen years after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 we remember the CWA members who died on that terrible day. We salute the thousands of fellow CWA members who worked to rebuild and restore networks and services for months afterward. We recognize the many CWA members who currently suffer from the illnesses they got from working at Ground Zero, and the members who lost their lives to those illnesses in the years since. Many of those workers are and were members of Local 1101. We are grateful for your work and your sacrifice, and we will never forget what you gave and what you did.

Wishing all our members a safe and happy Labor Day

On behalf of the Executive Board of Local 1101 I’d like to wish all our members a safe and happy Labor Day. It has been a rough year. We have lost beloved members, friends, and family to COVID. Many of our lives have been turned upside down by the pandemic. We have members who are working in completely different situations than they’re used to, and members who have been furloughed or laid off. We had all hoped to be in a different place by now in terms of COVID. You have shown great resilience and perseverance throughout this crisis and we are so proud of our members.

Local 1101 and NYSNA demand NY fund our healthcare centers

CWA Local 1101 and New York State Nurses Association members joined together outside Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx on Tuesday. The action is one of many across New York State this week demanding that New York raise revenue and fund our healthcare centers. Our healthcare centers need adequate funding to protect the health and safety of the workers and the patients they care for.
