Local 1101 members stopped working for 8 minutes and 46 seconds yesterday, joining CWA members across the country to commemorate George Floyd and to show solidarity with the movement for Black Lives and racial equality.

Members at AT&T Mobility locations, Liberty Health rehabilitation facilities, Verizon central offices and call centers, manholes, basement feeders and offices, from all of our bargaining units, working from home and in the field, stopped work and stood, sat or kneeled in solidarity with the growing movement for racial justice.

There is a bill pending in New Jersey (S-2380) that would add COVID-19 to the list of illnesses and injuries covered by the state’s workers’ compensation program and would create the presumption that any essential employee who contracts COVID-19 did so at work. Dear Brothers and Sisters, As trade unionists and as Americans, we were all outraged by the vicious murder of George Floyd. We are heartened by the uprising of hundreds of thousands of Americans, Black, Brown and white, demanding an end to racism and declaring: “Black Lives Matter.” Because of COVID-19, it has been difficult for many of us to show our solidarity with this movement. But on Thursday, June 11, at 12 noon, we will take a stand against racism by doing what trade unionists do when they are protesting for what’s right and fair: Stopping Work.

NYC Labor Leaders Call on Governor, Mayor, and Police Commissioner to Put a Stop to Police Brutality

The systemic assault on the Black body has gone on for far too long—400 years and counting. We are outraged and heartbroken over the police murder of George Floyd, just as we were at the killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Walter Scott, Philando Castile, Sandra Bland and so many more. Further, we are disheartened by the profound lack of leadership demonstrated by our elected leaders, especially their inability to propose and implement substantive reforms that promote real change.

RIP Noel MacMahon

We are sad to report that Noel MacMahon, former Chief Steward of Local 1101, died in May of this year. Noel started work at NY Tel in January of 1969. When Noel retired in 2010 he was Chief Steward for the CXM and cable maintenance garage at 34 Street and the Safety Director for the Local. This picture is of Noel at Ground Zero in 2001, where he worked on safety issues following 911.

RIP Bill Haas

Bill Haas was a Bronx 1101 legend. He started at the phone company in 1964 and worked there for more than 40 years. Bill was Chief Steward at the Zerega Avenue repair garage for decades. He was the driving force behind the Commodore Award, which established two-man areas throughout the five boroughs for technician’s safety. He was a role-model and mentor to countless Stewards and Chiefs in the Bronx.
